A Few Famous Artists

(Works by all of these artists are available in our gallery.)

Kitagawa Utamaro (1753-1806)

Although internationally renowned as an artistic genius, relatively little is known about Utamaro. He is most famous for his pictures of beautiful women or 'bijin'. His models were beautiful women from the streets and licensed quarters of Edo. Prices for his original prints are astronomical but modern reproductions are available.

Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849)

Often referred to as 'mad about painting', Hokusai devoted his life to art and did not lay down his brush until his death. Although he is said to have produced around 30,000 works in his life, his masterpieces are undoubtedly the series "Thirty-six views of Mt. Fuji", including the iconic "Great Wave Off Kanagawa". This series added a new dimension to the national perception of Mt. Fuji as an artistic subject as well as an object of worship.

Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858)

Hiroshige is best known for his "Fifty-three Stages of the Tokaido", which catapulted him to fame in his lifetime and secured his reputation as a first-rank ukiyoe artist. He uses mountains and rivers, the moon and snow, rain and wind to delicately express the sentiments of travellers on the Tokaido road, connecting Edo (Tokyo) and Kyoto.
